Attending a school of grooming is a popular avenue into a career as a pet groomer, or the more contemporary term "pet stylist." Engaging an apprenticeship position with an experienced groomer and business owner is possible, but inconsistently available. Generally you must personally contact the owners of pet grooming businesses in the area where you wish to work and ask if they offer entry-level training positions. Some owners may be wary of your request. The history of the grooming industry is littered with tales of business owners whose entry-level trainees quit after they were trained. Worse yet, departing employees all too often establish competitor businesses down the street from their previous employers. That's rude of course, or perhaps "just business," but it also explains why some owners rarely offer entry-level training. However, it is becoming increasingly available at major retail pet store chains. Graduating from a reputable school of pet grooming can be an excellent passport to employment into more advanced positions. Attending a school is essential when you intend to be self-employed from the start of your career. The ability to focus is vital for groomers, and graduating from a school of grooming is a demonstration of one's ability to focus on acquiring skills necessary to groom pets. Notice the student-groomer above is highly-focused on what she and the pet is doing at all times in order to deliver safe and aesthetic pet styling, even in front of a camera.
