COAT & GROOM TIPS

Using protein coat conditioners and de-tangling solutions during the pre-bath brush and comb out stage can make the job a lot easier on this breed if the undercoat is substantial. Start with a slicker brush session or some groomers prefer a pin brush, and follow with a comb out session. It may be easier to start with a coarse comb, and then a medium comb. Various combs are available from most grooming suppliers.

Using modern high velocity dryers to blow off excess water after the bath saves a tremendous amount of drying time. Some groomers prefer to use a large pin brush instead of slicker brush for the hand fluff dry process. You can expect even more loose hair to remove after the bath, and finish with a final comb out. Brushes and combs are available from most grooming suppliers.

Don't forget to scissor the hair under the feet even with the pads, and trim any other stray hairs around the feet. Clipping the whiskers with scissors is optional and usually best left to the decision of the dog owner.

Don't overlook that the Akita may be aggressive to varying degrees and you should be skilled in handling behavioral pets before grooming them. Because of the size of Akitas two persons should lift them in or out of tubs when a ramp or lift is not available.

After applying the second shampoo, and before you rinse it out apply a cream rinse and comb through with an undercoat rake.
