COAT & GROOM TIPS

Thinning shears can come in very handy for most Australian Terrier cuts, especially for trimming over long hairs on front legs.

Use a #10 blade to trim the stomach area carefully; always trim with the grain. The outside edges of ears may be clipped as well with a #10 blade. The back of the ears are usually lightly hand stripped to remove long hairs.

The top knot should not be flattened! Select a shampoo and conditioner that adds body but does not soften the coat.

Hand stripping elements are important and vital if being shown. Typically the back of the neck is hand stripped a little so that it blends into the body and shoulders, and the underside of the front chin.

"Cow licks" are common to this breed in some areas such as the back of each leg. Hand stripping elements are important and vital if being shown. Typically the back of the neck is hand stripped a little so that it blends into the body and shoulders, and the underside of the front chin is sometimes stripped slightly.

The styling of an Australian Terrier is limited but there are many important touches. We suggest acquiring a professional how-to grooming book for this breed.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Show groomed Australian Terriers are usually bathed a few days before being shown to allow the coat time to return to a more natural but appearance.

Multi-Breed Books Including Australian Terrier

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
