COAT & GROOM TIPS

The Belgian Sheepdog has a double coat of varying density depending upon local climate. Guard hairs are usually long and straight and plentiful. The guard coat should not be overly soft, silky nor wiry. Undercoat can be very dense. A show coat would not be trimmed except in the least amount and only as needed.

Using protein coat conditioners and detangling solutions during the pre-bath brush and comb out stage can make the job a lot easier on this breed. Start with a slicker brush session, followed by a comb out session. It may be easier to start with a coarse comb, and then a medium comb.

Don't forget to scissor the hair under the feet even with the pads, and trim any other stray hairs around the feet.

Protein coat conditioners work well on this breed.

Thinning shears can be used to remove excessive hair that may block the anus area and collect dirt.
MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Using modern high velocity dryers to blow off excess water after the bath saves a tremendous amount of drying time. Some groomers prefer to use a pin brush instead of slicker brush for the hand fluff dry process. You can expect even more loose hair to remove after the bath, and finish with a final comb out.

A pH-alkaline balanced shampoo helps damaged coats on this breed.
