COAT & GROOM TIPS

Some hand stripping is required for show quality styling. Hand stripping requires training; you can easily misuse a hand stripping knife. Overall the styling for this breed is to neaten its appearance.

Thinning shears are essential to removing stray hairs that tend to group on the neck, back, belly, brisket and front chest of some dogs.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

A spray coat conditioner can give a touch of brilliance to a finished styling on this breed.

You may need to neaten up the eye area so the pet has clear vision. Some groomers refer to the eyebrow pencil line at the outer corner of each eye and let it show. Neaten the eyebrow and again, don't let hairs face inward toward the eye.

"Your description has the common pet groomer mistake of removing the hair in front of the eyes. That absolutely ruins the breeds otter look. A better description if you would like it and a picture you may use is attached. The Border Terrier should have a short sparse beard and if so long it looks schnauzer like the longest hair should be plucked , or it can be carefully scissored using thinning shears. Hand or knife strip off the ears, cheeks and forehead smooth and take off most or all of the eyebrows. Leave the hair in front of the eyes on the tear line and between eyes on the top of the muzzle. That gives the breed the otter look and is not dangerous to eye health and will not impair their vision. For show or more detail pull that hair in front of the front corners of the eyes forward and holding it down with your thumb pluck out some of the hair behind it in the stop area between the eyes." Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
