If you have a Bouvier des Flandres, you know they require a lot of care and grooming. Breeding dogs like the Bouvier requires skill and patience as well. They're also susceptible to certain pet allergies, so take care when breeding. Dog health is extremely important to ensure that the puppies come out healthy!

COAT & GROOM TIPS

Owners not showing their dog nor demanding a full coated Bouvier des Flandres may choose to having the pet clipped with a shorter coat by preference. Showing the dog requires a well-managed full coat, clipping and some hand-stripping by a professional. The difficulty of styling this breed is well above-average for pet owners not trained in grooming techniques. We recommend a how-to grooming guide for this breed (see below).

The Bouvier des Flandres has a double coat. The outer coat is more coarse and wiry in comparison to its substantial, soft and fine under coat.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Using modern high velocity dryers to blow off excess water after the bath saves a tremendous amount of drying time. Some groomers prefer to use a pin brush instead of slicker brush for the hand fluff dry process. You can expect even more loose hair to remove after the bath, and finish with a final comb out.

A pH-alkaline balanced shampoo helps damaged coats on this breed.

"After shampooing and squeezing most of the water out of the coat, Ii mix half a capful of Downy or other fabric softener in a gallon of water and pour over coat working in well with fingers. Don't rinse. It makes mats easier to deal with and static free. It also makes the dogs smell great without cologne spray." Submitted by Ruzzito

Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
