COAT & GROOM TIPS

English Springer Spaniels have a double coat. The undercoat is shorter than the outer coat and noted for being dense and soft. The outer coat tends to be longer than the undercoat, and a bit wavy. The hair coat must be maintained on a regular basis. A healthy coat is noted for its shine, and feathering is very important for a well-styled dog. Show standards for styling and coat appearance are very strict for this breed and will require an advanced groomer professional.

The force of the blow will help to separate the hair and let you remove all of the undercoat shed. Use long strokes with a pin brush. It's best to remove the majority of the dead coat before the bath. Check behind the ears for matts as well.

When clipping the body also clip with the grain, not against or across. Blending the clipped area into the fringe takes skill. You don't want wavy or erratic lines nor rough edges.

Ear furnishings should be long except you clip the top third of the ear leather with the #10 or #9 blade start at the top going outward toward tip of ear and its furnishings. When clipping the body also clip with the grain, not against or across. Blending the clipped area into the fringe takes skill. You don't want wavy or erratic lines nor rough edges.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

When hand-fluff drying the English Springer Spaniel ensure that you brush in long strokes from the skin to the length of the coat only where the blow dryer force is pointed on the dog. Finish with a final comb out before finish trimming.

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
