COAT & GROOM TIPS

Regular brushing and combing twice a week is essential in order to remove substantial wooly hair shed from the moderately dense undercoat, and not only the outer guard coat which protects the undercoat. The best outer coat is somewhere between coarse and silky. The density of the hair coat can be misleading to novice groomers or owners of this breed; it is dense. Feathering is important to the appropriate appearance of this breed, and strict standards of coat condition and appearance exist for show coat quality.

Golden Retriever coats can pick-up static in the drying process, and which may be mitigated by a conditioning rinse.

Dry the coat brushing in the direction of the growth. Use the force dryer to separate the hair and ensure all shed is removed.

Some groomers reduce the body coat length with clippers and blades whereas some others thin and scissor the body coat to a neatened but natural appearance. You can neaten the edge of the ears with blending shears and reduce the amount of hair under the ear flap to allow it to hang closer to the head. The choice is that of the pet owner. It is far easier for pet owners to maintain the Golden Retriever when the body coat has been reduced, but they should realize it is not the "natural look" for the breed. A traditional Golden does not have a scissored or clipped look; but again, let the owner make the choice.

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
