COAT & GROOM TIPS

It takes no more than 2 years for the coat to cord. Before then mats (a cord is matting, but developed by with human assistance) must be carefully removed with a comb and re-corded by hand. Using a metal comb you part the coat into square sections about 3/4 inch in diameter. Using hair styling gel you twist one section around your finger making a cord. This must be done every 2 to 4 weeks for dogs less than 18 months old as needed. We strongly suggest all Komondor puppy owners to have professional assistance, usually their breeder, to assist them in developing the puppy and young adult corded coat.

The adult coat consists of a dense, soft, woolly undercoat much like the puppy coat, and a coarser outer coat that is wavy or curly. The coarser hairs of the outer coat trap the softer undercoat, forming permanent, strong cords that are felt-like to the touch. A grown dog is entirely covered with a heavy coat of these tassel-like cords, which form naturally.

Using clippers and the #10 blade lightly shave the anal area only, no pressure on skin. Clean the inside of the abdomen as well.

Fill the bathing tub about 4 to 6 inches high with warm water. Using a sponge and your hands work the water through the cords until the dog is entirely wet. Empty the tub water. Apply diluted whitening shampoo to the cords with the sponge ensuring the soap reaches the skin. Then begin the rinse from the head down the back to tail. With the sponge squeeze the cords until rinse water is clear. Use towels to carefully squeeze the cords until little more than damp. Do not brush and blow dry! If you do not cage dry place the dog on the drying counter near blow dryers until constant supervision (this works best in a busy drying room of a larger salon). In this way the dog is blow dried indirectly, and the key is not to of course blow and brush! Cords are usually trimmed to about 5 inches, clearing the floor.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

"Most groomers are never trained in Komondor grooming in school or apprenticeships even. Their owners often learn how to groom them, and to make the cords at a young age." Submitted by a PetGroomer.com visitor.

Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
