COAT & GROOM TIPS

Miniature Schnauzers have a softer coat than the Standard and Giant Schnauzers, and that increases their likelihood for matting and tangling. For this reason, the dog should be combed and brushed at least 3 times a week to prevent matting. Miniature Schnauzers have a double coat where the outer coat is somewhat wiry and hard. The soft undercoat is somewhat dense and close. Owners not showing their dog nor demanding a full coated Miniature Schnauzer may choose to having the pet clipped with a shorter coat by preference. Showing the dog requires a professionally managed full coat and styling demands.

We strongly suggest using a how-to guide for this breed. See resources below.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

The Miniature Schnauzer head should appear rectangular, not round.

"I have a black Miniature Schnauzer. When he was first clipped the groomer clipped 'with the coat' which resulted in his color going - he turned grey. He was left for a number of months & just hand stripped to take out the old under coat. He was then clipped against the growth of his coat & in a short time his color came back." "I like to use a 7F backwards on some of my Schnauzers if my 10 that I usually use isn't looking as smooth as I like. I thin the legs out each groom on my really thick soft coated Schnauzers that we see more of now and it prevents matting till the next groom appointment." Submitted by Rachel.

Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
