COAT & GROOM TIPS

Regular brushing and combing several times a week is essential to removing hair shed. The density of the hair coat can be misleading to novice groomers or owners of this breed. The haircoat is dense and so easily matted that when it is not cared for a period of time, it can become so matted a groomer has no choice but to remove the coat, something no one really wants for this breed unless it's the owner's choice. Use both slicker and pin brushes, along with metal combs both wide and medium for matted dogs.

The de-matting process may be significantly eased by using spray-on detangling products designed for use before the bath.

This breed is best groomed by thoroughly brushing and combing out BEFORE the bath. After fluff-drying, comb the hair once again to a beautifully comb-styled presentation and removing any last tangles.

Using modern high velocity dryers to blow off excess water after the bath saves a tremendous amount of drying time. Some groomers prefer to use a pin brush instead of slicker brush for the hand fluff dry process. You can expect even more loose hair to remove after the bath, and finish with a final comb out. Some areas of hair may dry and curl before they are hand fluff-dried, and if so, lightly dampen the curled areas and then brush and dry to remove curls.

The dog may collect some hair or matter in the eye corners which you should wipe clean with cotton moistened in clean water.

MORE GROOMING TIPS FOR PROFESSIONALS

Use scissors to trim and neaten feet and hocks. You can add even more volume to the coat's appearance by back brushing with a pin brush as a finishing touch.

Multi-Breed Books

These books contain little or no breed specific grooming information. They do provide very good to excellent general breed information. Of course, having pictures of the breed is a great help when grooming the breed compared to having nothing else.
