Which School is Right for You?

List of Questions for Schools

Attend a reputable school or institute of pet grooming. Selecting a school simply because it is close to your present home is not always an effective decision from a career viewpoint. Proximity is almost always the reason that students choose a school, but what if the school can't meet your educational objectives?

You must know that the training you are being given will satisfy your educational, employment or self-employment objectives. Curriculums and the background of instructors can vary greatly from one institution to another. Your first step is to call or write and request a "catalog" or brochure from several institutions you will consider for enrollment.

This Info Menu is Sponsored by:

Carefully compare their curriculums, historical background, and get answers for at least the following questions below. Then, compare your research results with your pet grooming career objectives to make a more informed enrollment decision.

  • Is the institution "approved" or "licensed" as a vocational education institution? Schools outside U.S. may have an alternate form of approval, or none may be required. Ask the school if they are subject to governmental or other licensing to operate as a vocational school.

  • Is the institution also accredited? Do they offer financial assistance? If they do not yet offer governmental Financial Aid do they offer private payment plans?

  • Will you learn to groom multiple breed groups and mixed breeds? Cats?

  • Does the institution groom enough pets every school day to guarantee that you will have 1 or more pets per day for you to groom without sharing with other students?

  • Does the institution offer a job placement program and statistics for their actual placement success?

  • Will you learn pet grooming business management instruction as well as pet grooming skills training?

  • What is the field-related professional background of the institution's director and instructors?

  • How many instructors are there per student? What is the enrollment limit per class?

  • Is the size of the institution's pet owner clientele, and average number of daily grooming appoints, adequate to supply all enrolled students with pets to groom every school day?

  • How many of the total course hours are classroom experience versus hands-on pet grooming?

  • Does the institution provide references?

  • If you are attending from out of the area, do they offer a dormitory, or room and apartment rental assistance?

You should have many more questions by the time you read the brochure or catalog of several schools. The differences will become self-evident. What if your training curriculum and experience is inadequate because you chose a less effective school?

Take your decision very seriously, and we look forward to your entry into this exciting and growing industry. If you open a business, be sure to list it in our PetGroomer.com Buyer's Guide and come back often for business information. We've got a lot more coming. Also, check for job openings in PetGroomer.com Classified Ads.
