Locating accurate and substantial statistics for
the pet grooming industry is a challenge. Here you will find a growing database of
information. At this time, we present some basic information to assist you. We suggest you
check back as this section will grow substantially in the future.
The pet grooming market is an attractive
opportunity that surprises most career and business opportunity persons. Though many
organizations and business persons are working generously to improve the state of this
unique profession there exists a less than desirable stereotypical image of a pet
grooming business, and one that defies the astounding market description. That image does
not translate to businesses known to highly-profitable, offering substantial employment
opportunities to help reduce unemployment, unilateral standards of performance as a
profession, thoroughly modern and well-equipped businesses, and substantial networking
with others in the same industry through trade associations.
While these factors are more
prevalent in other sectors of the pet and pet care industry, such as retail and veterinary
care, pet grooming as its own industry has yet to match their achievements.
However, we are certain
that the industry will reach a
recognized professional level with the ongoing direction of today's
industry leaders, and hopefully your contribution.
The source of much of today's somewhat poor
stereotypical image in general is the result of outdated grooming management problems.
There are many fine pet groomers with superior pet grooming skills and humane concern, but
there are few that have equally accomplished the same level in the management of their pet
grooming business. Without a broad representation of management expertise in most pet
grooming businesses, it's unlikely that the full market potential for pet grooming
services will ever be achieved. Did you know that in the U.S. there are approximately
5,850 pet dogs and cats per pet grooming business (based on the number of businesses
advertising pet grooming services in the U.S. Buyer's Guide and an estimated 117 million
pet dogs and cats)? How many pet grooming business have such a clientele, even a fourth?
Very few. However, where there are businesses with relative clienteles based on their area
demographics, you will likely find an effective pet grooming business owner that obviously
grooms well, but also manages well. They don't rely on simply advertising in Buyer's Guide
and local publications. As a "professional" representative of their profession,
they enlighten their community of the benefits of professional pet care services in many
unique and complimentary ways, such as offering regulars tours of their salon to many
organizations and schools. They form working relationships with every veterinarian, and
seek the "lifeblood" of every service business, referrals.
Just as there are
Dairy Products Councils which broadcast the value of their products, the pet grooming
industry needs to form a council to attract a larger percentage of the approximately 60%
of households in the U.S. that own one or more pet dogs and cats. Until then, do it
yourself and conquer your market area. You are doing yourself a favor, and your community.
You are in a most unique industry. During the
extended California recession, the pet care industry hardly suffered. Most pet owners know
their pet dogs and cats as "household members" and for that reason they rarely
cutback on clean and happy pets in their homes. Just days after the 1994 Northridge quake
in Los Angeles several local pet groomers were doing brisk business. Amidst the
aftershocks pet owners simply had to have a clean pet. What a unique market! It can easily
support more service businesses. To tap into it you simply have to match your love of pets
with modern, proven effective management principles for professional pet care.
