Grooming Employment Opportunities in Retail Stores

Pet grooming is certainly a diverse industry considering you can have a home, mobile or commercial business, or work in grooming department within a kennel, veterinarian hospital or clinic, or a pet store. In the 1990's there has been significant growth in the number of grooming departments and that trend is expected to continue into the new millennia.

Leading the way for grooming departments in retail environments are companies like PETsMART, PETCO and other superstores. Of course, to many groomers discussions of grooming departments in superstores often leads to widely differing points of view and some emotion. However, from our point of view, as career consultants, we are pleased that there are more job openings for groomers being created by the growth of grooming departments in retail stores. Most self-employed groomers agree though that overall these stores do not pose a significant threat to their businesses. They typically claim that their clients are loyal and willing to stay with them when new super pet stores open in their areas, and that is the result of their providing plenty of customer service for their clients. So we strongly urge those of you to consider the importance of not only your fine pet care services, but your client services. For more information on client relations at this site, click here. Stay sharp as it seems logical that the superstores are always interested in growing their market share, of course.

When you consider that there are 4,000 dogs and cats in the U.S. alone for every pet grooming business today, isn't there really enough pets to go around? You bet. Very few grooming anywhere in the U.S. have saturated their market areas. In fact, one reason we favor vocational licensing of groomers is that as a body groomers could come together and through co-op advertising spread the word to all pet owners in their areas as to value of professional pet grooming. Maybe this way the millions of pet dogs and cats not being professionally groomed now will be, and everyone will be more busy than ever.

For some groomers, working a retail pet store large or small is ideal. Often they enjoy benefits like retirement plans, sick pay, vacation pay and more which is often not available in independent grooming businesses. If it's right for you, investigate employment opportunities in retail stores. PetSmart and PETCO both have web sites with more employment information (see links on Home Page to their web sites).
