PETCO ON THE MOVE

PETCO announced recently its intent to expand its regional training centers to 9 locations across the USA. In the next year PETCO plans to hire and train 600 new pet groomers according to Stu Wolman, Director of Pet Services. Their course is 20 weeks long and includes pay and hands on training.

For the first 4 weeks of training students are paid a straight hourly wage. Thereafter they move into stores for hands on training where they can earn commission on pets groomed. Commission rates increase as the student progresses.

Backer Show Attracts Record Number of Buyers

Almost 7,000 qualified buyers attended the 14th Annual Pet Industry Spring Trade Show held April 12-14, 2002 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. More than 520 manufacturers and distributors filled nearly 1,000 booths, up 6 percent from last year. A total of 2,425 buying firms registered to attend the show. Unlike other industries the pet market seems to be steady in uncertain economic times. Indeed, our large grooming business had to endure a 7 year downturn in the computer industry in the Silicon Valley of California in the late 1970's into the 1980's and every year we still boosted our income over the previous year. Laid off workers still wanted a clean pet in their house. It's great to see the Backer show illustrates the same trend for pet care in today's uncertain economy. For more information on H.H.
