My tip is to look beyond products made specifically for dogs. Just as Mane 'N' Tail shampoo found its way from the horse stalls into the shower stalls of horsewomen, there is a product that can help you deal with badly tangled haircoats that you intend to brush out. It's called "Cowboy Magic". Only a small amount does wonders. Brushes and combs glide through the hair more easily. The manufacturer attests to its safety for use on dogs (but not on the kitties, thanks), and it's readily available in tack shops and feed supply stores.
