Petey Petey wasn't going to make it much longer in the condition he was in. With broken English, Petey's owners explained to me how they'd entrusted Petey with "friends" before they went back to visit their home country and they eventually returned to the sight of their beloved dog suffering, encased in his own coat and feces. When Petey arrived at my shop, the first thing I noticed was the incredible stench. Upon closer examination, I couldn't even find this poor dog's eyes or ears under the mess. As I slowly freed Petey from his pelt which clipped off in one hard, solid piece (wet shave method, using #15 and #30 blades), I uncovered badly irritated skin with embedded foxtails, festering hot spots and urine burns. Petey stood quietly through it all, even while I worked the cement-like matted casings from his legs and tail with a #40 blade. His hind legs were almost completely matted together. After the worst was finally over, I gave Petey a finishing bath (which I could tell shocked him as he felt his skin being touched for the first time in a long time) and neatened him up. By the end of the appointment it was obvious that he was exhausted, but relieved and oh, so appreciative. Petey even "smiled" and wagged his tail for his after photo shoot and again when his teary-eyed owners came to pick him up. |
