"Why I became a Groomer"

This is my first year as a dog groomer, and has completely changed my life. I left my job as Retail Store Manager last January wondering what to do. I was tired of working jobs I hated, playing by corporations rules, and missing all the important events in my children's lives. I wanted to find something that fulfilled my ambition, humanity, love of people, and still watch my children grow.

I was reading a magazine talking about animal related business. It spoke to me. It was as if that article was talking directly to me. I LOVE animals. I looked at all the different animal business. I love cutting hair. I began tinkering with the idea and started investigating, studying everything I could find. I began buying all the materials, and practicing. I worked with experienced groomers, and in my down time...studying. I found a groomer willing to spend time with me to teach me everything I needed to know.

It took me several months to get to my opening date, but I did it. It started out slow, but every month has picked up. I was amazed at the instant gratification of making a pet look and feel better. I've NEVER had a job that has given me so much back. I'm excited to meet new clients, and new owners. I've been embraced by my local pet community and got involved with trainers, pet rescue's and other groomers. I get paid to love and care for animals. It's amazing.

This job gives me time to see my family, and provides a good income, and the most stimulating job I've ever had. I learn something new everyday. I've got my dog bite "battle scar," but know that's a part of the business. There's so much good in this business that the little bumps don't phase me too much. I found a small retail spot that I'm renting in April 2004. I've always wanted my own business, a dream becoming a reality.

I love having a job that challenges me. I see results first hand. My husband allows me to have ONE dog, 2 Guinea pigs, and a hamster. This job allows me to spoil other people's animals. My father once told me "people that love what they do for a living are the lucky ones." I realize now how true that statement is. I LOVE what I do. I love seeing an owner's face when they pick up their dog that has "pep in their step" and a wonderful smell. It's nice to have a job that gives you instant gratification. I take a pet that needs some TLC. I give it a wonderful bath, clean it up, put in a bandana or bow, and make it look like a million. And at the end, I get money for it!

It's hard to believe I ever did anything else. I'm so thankful I found this. I feel sad for people that don't love their job. Getting paid is a bonus to what I do!
